t-Statistic Based Correlation and Heterogeneity Robust Inference

چکیده
We develop a general approach to robust inference about a scalar parameter when the data is potentially heterogeneous and correlated in a largely unknown way. The key ingredient is the following result of Bakirov and Székely (2005) concerning the small sample properties of the standard t−test: For a significance level of 5% or lower, the t−test remains conservative for underlying observations that are independent and Gaussian with heterogenous variances. One might thus conduct robust large sample inference as follows: partition the data into q ≥ 2 groups, estimate the model for each group and conduct a standard t−test with the resulting q parameter estimators. This results in valid inference as long as the groups are chosen in a way that ensures the parameter estimators to be asymptotically independent, unbiased and Gaussian of possibly different variances. We provide examples of how to apply this approach to time series, panel, clustered and spatially correlated data. JEL classification: C32

On Robust Measurement of Risk, Inequality and Concentration
Many risk, inequality, poverty and concentration measures are extremely sensitive to outliers, dependence, heterogeneity and heavy tails. In this paper we focus on robust measurement of risk, inequality, poverty and concentration under heterogeneity, dependence and heavy-tailedness of largely unknown form using the recent results on t−statistic based heterogeneity and correlation robust inferen...

In the empirical analysis of panel data the Breusch Pagan statistic has become a standard tool to infer on unobserved heterogeneity over the cross section. Put differently, the test statistic is central to discriminate between the pooled regression and the random effects model. Conditional versions of the test statistic have been provided to immunize inference on unobserved heterogeneity agains...
متن کاملA robust Hotelling test
Hotelling’s T 2 statistic is an important tool for inference about the center of a multivariate normal population. However, hypothesis tests and confidence intervals based on this statistic can be adversely a¤ected by outliers. Therefore, we construct an alternative inference technique based on a statistic which uses the highly robust MCD estimator [9] instead of the classical mean and covarian...
متن کاملInference with Few Heterogenous Clusters
Consider inference with a small number of potentially heterogeneous clusters. Suppose estimating the model on each cluster yields q asymptotically unbiased, independent Gaussian estimators with potentially heterogeneous variances. Following Ibragimov and Müller (2010), one can then conduct asymptotically valid inference with a standard t-test based on the q cluster estimators, since at conventi...
متن کاملA powerful and robust test statistic for randomization inference in group-randomized trials with matched pairs of groups.
For group-randomized trials, randomization inference based on rank statistics provides robust, exact inference against nonnormal distributions. However, in a matched-pair design, the currently available rank-based statistics lose significant power compared to normal linear mixed model (LMM) test statistics when the LMM is true. In this article, we investigate and develop an optimal test statist...
